Your Spring round-up from the Chair of Future
News Categories: future
It’s happened again. It only seems 5 minutes ago we were wishing each other Happy New Year, and suddenly here we are on the cusp on Easter. Where did the last 3 months go?! Spring is tantalisingly close…and what a start to the year it’s been! We’ve enjoyed the winter Olympics, been sub-zero heroes battling the beast from the east and seen the first of many commemorative activities take shape as we celebrate #Vote100.
Birmingham has seen plenty of exciting news and developments as well! Many of you rallied to join our online petition, urging Channel 4 to make our fair city its new home. With the #WMGeneration hashtag trending across social media platforms, it’s fair to say our voices were heard. Film buffs will also know that Ready Player One is now screening at cinemas worldwide. Filmed in Birmingham, Spielberg’s science fiction action adventure (based on the Ernest Cline novel) is garnering wide acclaim and has helped put our city squarely on the map. And rightly so, in our unashamedly biased opinion! Birmingham is truly buzzing right now. Hopefully many of you enjoyed one or both of last weekends’ festivals: Birmingham Wine Weekend (featured in the Telegraph) and Independent Birmingham Festival had us spoiled for choice! On the development front: the WMCA has published its Investment Prospectus – showcasing 20 of the transformational schemes underway across the region – well worth a read. We also have even more new restaurant and nightlife options coming to town (lunch at The Ivy, anyone?).
Within BPS Birmingham Future we have been busy! In the last 3 months we have had some fantastic personal development events on the Art of Negotiation and Meaningfulness in the Workplace. Watch this space for more fab topics from our Development Committee. We had a hugely successful launch of BYPY 2018 last month with around 100 of you gathered at the Canal House to get this years’ awards off to an incredible start. Applications are in and we’ll soon be announcing the finalists!! BYPY 2018 is certainly set to be our biggest and best awards to date. Have you booked your ticket yet?? Our monthly networking event at Zen Metro is going from strength to strength, so if you haven’t popped down yet, we’ll be back there on 4 April; and be sure to book in for our Spring Social on 12 March at Island Bar!
Last week we launched Professional Services Week for 2018 and look forward to welcoming even more local schoolchildren into the city in June this year. For more information on how to get involved see here. We are also excited to be bringing back our Member Offers – so keep an eye on your inbox for those landing very soon; and in May our #DiscoverBirmingham series will return with a trip to the Victorian Law Courts.
Finally, as the nights get longer and we all start venturing back outside – why not pop your running trainers on and sign up for the Birmingham 10k in May or the Half-Marathon in October? Our charity partner LoveBrum would welcome runners fundraising on their behalf (email: email@example.com for more information) and any alumni of the University of Birmingham amongst you can sign up to run in support of their 10,000 Lives campaign. If you’d rather fundraise for charity in a different way, join the Edgbaston Sleepout to help tackle homelessness or sign up to the BPS Future Development Committee’s Million Makers‘ team in support of the Prince’s Trust (email firstname.lastname@example.org to find out more).
So, an eventful Spring ahead! I look forward to seeing you at one of our events really soon; but in the meantime – Happy Easter!
– Victoria Ball, Chair BPS Birmingham Future
