A New Year a New Beginning

I can’t believe it is that time again for me to write my latest blog and let you all know of the remarkable fresh start I had this year. For starters I officially made it half way through the Graduate Apprentice, which is scary as its feels like only yesterday when I first found out about this amazing opportunity!

2nd Placement: DBK LTD

I joined DBK the first week of January and even though I was extremely excited, a part of me was slightly upset. I say this because IDEX, my previous placement, had begun to feel like family and it was unfortunate that I had to leave them so soon. But nevertheless I was super excited about the opportunity at DBK, where last year’s Graduate apprentice, Louise Bennett, secured a permanent placement.

The world of construction and project management has been extraordinarily remarkable. It is more than what I could have possibly imagined. From the first day I was given projects allowing me to work on my own initiative and demonstrate my personal capabilities. I have also received some of the best management support to help my confidence to grow.

Due to not having any technical knowledge I found it a struggle to begin with; however, after many crash courses on various topics, I now feel confident producing my own reports, working alongside my colleagues and mostly not being afraid to question everything I do not understand. The great aspect of this, is that I have gained experience in a field I never thought possible and it has been one of the most inspiring experiences of my life.

From developing roads to new student accommodation projects, I have had the opportunity to work with different stakeholders such as clients and contractors in the business and contribute on ongoing projects. DBK are a pleasure to work for and it is a great environment for those looking to grow professionally especially in terms of their long term futures.

Aspire Leadership Team

So the Aspire team have been busy lately hosting a number of events to get those of you in education connected to the professional services sector. We had an extremely successful event at Aston University, helping to build a network for students to socialise, and we have some exciting upcoming opportunities for those of you both in work and education. Make sure you keep your diaries free for some of the webinars and networking events launching soon!

My Top 3 Highlights:

BrumLife 2016: By far one of the best events hosted by Birmingham Future this year; we had a great number of people interested in the employment opportunities available in Birmingham and some fantastic freebies too, such as free tickets to Everyman Cinema.

Site Visits: Part of my role at DBK allows me to visit some of the various projects we are managing to record the progress taking place on site. What’s great about this is I am able to dress up and feel like Bob the Builder in my hard hat and steel toe capped boots.

Snagging: This is by far one of the most enjoyable things about my role at DBK. One of my memorable moments was visiting a gypsy site and recording the defects in the buildings for the purposes of the warranties.

So that’s all from me for now, tune in for my next blog in the summer, when I will be at JLT Specialty.
